Once you have launched a solid website, the next step is to make sure people see it. The internet marketing industry was born about a day after the field of website design. It was not long before 'search engine optimization' became the object of the game. SEO is the art of developing content to catch the attention of search engines that will direct users to your site.
While most people understand that incorporating relative keywords into web page content will get them noticed, it is sometimes easier said than done. Capitalizing on this niche, countless companies have sprung up to manage SEO for you. Sounds simple. Now your only task is to decide to whom you can entrust your website.
The main consideration when it comes to choosing an internet marketing company is understanding that they are just that-- companies. Like you, they are businesses who want to make a profit. Unfortunately, far too many cross the line from profit-motivated professionals to scammers.
You must first beware any marketing company that promises fast results. While you may be fortunate enough to get quick recognition, it generally works the way all good advertising does-- slowly, steadily, and reliably.
Furthermore, be careful of large, dazzling numbers. Just as statistics are meant to impress via quantity, internet marketing companies who promise to submit your pages to dozens or hundreds of directories or search engines are simply making pointless, outrageous claims. So what if your website is listed on GoshMe? How many people do you know who only use such an obscure search engine?
There are also other considerations when your content is sent in so many directions. Do you know where your website will end up? From small businesses to major corporations, companies have a right and responsibility to know the exact context in which they are being promoted.
Finally, question any marketing offer that hints at an exchange program. On the surface this may sound like an ideal win-win reciprocation. In reality though, you may be endangering your security or reputation. If you truly wanted to partner with this other party, chances are you would have already been doing so, regardless of marketing interests. In other words, don't get taken in by a bad internet marriage, no matter how romantic it sounds.
Having warned against scammers, it is important to note that there are legitimate internet marketing businesses out there. Check out the rest of this month's Anttix Antics to learn what to look for in a good company.
