Plug, Play, and Backup

It is a beautiful thing when a piece of essential hardware is both easy to use and affordable. Such is the case with external hard drives. While many home and office computer owners have been 'meaning to get one of those', there is no reason to procrastinate any longer.

Who
External hard drives benefit anyone whose internal computer drive is too full and/or is slowing down regular functioning. Even if this is not the case yet, an external hard drive gives the peace of mind of backed up data, particularly if you work with audio or video editing.

What
First determine if you need a drive for your desktop or laptop. Then decide if your drive needs to be portable. Though most external hard drives are relatively small, not all are designed to be carried around. Finally, look at how much space you realistically need. Of course, this varies for everyone, but take into consideration your current and future projects. At this point, you may already be past the hard part, as installation is straightforward, using either FireWire or USB 2.0 port. This means that you can simply 'plug-and-play', without extra software or hassle.

Where
Browse any chain store that sells basic computer equipment, or order online from your favorite trusted retailers.

How Much
Smaller drives start at about $70, and most home users can get by with a model under $150. Of course, if you need the granddaddy of external hard drives, you are welcome to pick up one of the $600-$800 units.

When
If you have been putting off buying and installing an external hard drive, do not wait any longer. Anttix recommends it as one of the best pieces of hardware in which to invest. Make this the first of the spring cleaning tasks you can cross off of your list. Now wasn't that easy?
